Post TCI 6l80E conversion
Haven't found it online yet but in chevy high performance there was an ad for 6l80E LSX conversion transmissions with PADDLE SHIFTERS for all LS1 style vehicles good to up to 850HP, as soon as I find the info I'll get it out but can you imagine a 6SPD auto to replace the 4l60?

that sounds awesome. i wonder how much cutting and fabricating you would need for that kind of swap

No idea, I would imagine at least a trans X-member and D/S, but I don't know how long the 6l80 is, it may even drop right in. The kit comes with a standalone controller so wiring should be simple.

instead of going through that hassle, i would just get a rebuilt kit for my 4l60e and then get a gear vendors over/underdrive unit. 8-spd selectable auto!

I heard about this last week, one of the MMS crew is looking to get it. From what he was saying, you send them a 4L60E and they convert it to a 6 speed and the package includes the paddle shifter kit.

So where is the line drawn for " Need TH400 strength "? I hope I didn't make a mistake building my 4L60 for the truck. Just curous...

Trucks are a different ballgame than cars. You're not making 600hp, but you are heavier, and tow. IMO, you're in the sweet spot for a built 60. Occasional towing, occasional hammer down. If you towed heavy all the time, then maybe the 80 would be better.

For a car, I'd say 500-600rwhp is where you're gonna be chewing up tranny's. Granted, if the car only sees the light of day when it's gonna get raced, the trans is gonna live a short life..

4l80 is a PITA swap though and still only nets you 4 gears. My 4l60 has proven plenty tough so far but having double overdrive would be really nice

My point was more than the 80 series is a much tougher trans than the 60 series, and merely putting a range box on the back does not equal the strength.

4.02 first gear in that 6L80 is sick though - I'd be willing to bet the TCM shifts to second gear at like 1mph.. :coffee

65 series is indeed "tougher" - that's a good way to put it.. it's a tougher 4l60, but still uses the same basic TH350/700R4 designs.

but the 80 is just a plain stronger design with the better pump, better drums and clutch packs, support for the drums, and not using bands for 2nd and 4th.. But it's also heavier and saps more HP from the driveline.

Just tidbits for the tech archives.. :)
