Post GTA Resto-Mod
In case anyone wants to follow along, the GTA is coming apart!

Here it is, as it sat when I got it, engine is the stock 305 with what appears to be a broken ring land :( so it is coming out!
Image

As you can see the interior is pretty much completely restored to original.

And here is the Original TPI engine, take a good luck because it is going into storage!
Image

Teardown: few pics of the engine teardown progress. This was after the first day, removed alot of the electronics, some of the intake etc..

More teardown, Top half of the TPI is gone (for good!), half the accessory drive, water pump, coolant overflow, alternator etc. Next up drain the power steering and remove that, pull the fuel delivery system and then the wiring harness can come out the rest of the way.

When did you get this? I don't recall hearing about it before. Looks like a nice car to start with. Do I spy some 4th-gen upgrades to the interior?

Car has been in the family since 1996, I got it about a month ago when the motor expired about 200 miles after being rebuilt and the old man lost interest, wants to finish his 55 Chevy more. As for the interior, it is all 1988 GTA, no 4th gen mods.

No, don't have that kind of coin to do it right, it is going to be a cammed Vortec 350 with the EFI connection OBD II/coil on plug upgrade, TPIS mini ram, 4th Gen fuel system and some other tweaks. This one is gonna be a driver, not a racer, most of the upgrades will be to the suspension and brakes, and I am also going to keep it so it can go back to stock without too much hassle when/if I sell it down the road. I'm on the fence for a T56 conversion, I want a manual but don't want to cut the sheetmetal.

Well final prep is tomorrow, and hopefully the motor comes out Sunday. Decided to pull it from the top, it is going to be too hard to maneuver it over tot he lift. But anyway, a dozen or so bolts and removal of the radiator and we are ready to rock!

finished the shift plate today. managed to cut the mirror switch hole without cracking it. I may re-do the vinyl wrap at some point, there are 2 small creases in it that will drive me nuts but for now it is done except for the 6 Spd shift patter sticker to cover up the indentation from the factory emblem. Overall I think it came out pretty good, below is a before and after shot!

If you ever decide to do this swap on a 3rd gen, the white sender is out of a 1999 3.4L Grand Prix, it is a 100% correct fit and will make the fuel gauge correct

I'm probably going to order all the front end parts in October, check out the list, any suggestions before I pull the trigger in October?

BMR LSX K-member
Tubular A-Arms
Front coil over conversion
Billet/poly sway bar bushings
Adjustable wonder bar
All new hardware
Poly motor mounts

I am going to do the steering at a later date so no need to go into that now, just want to get the stuff done that is easier with the engine out finished.

thoughts?

Started getting some of the interior out also, probably won't pull the seats or carpet until the weather gets better.

Just about done doing the teardown on the backhalf, just have to pull the tank tomorrow and I can start cleaning/painting. I do like finding just about no rust :). rear axle is torn down and ready for cleaning and paint. All the suspension is off for cleaning/paint.

There is very very little rust anywhere, only thing that may need some work is the rear end housing.

FINALLY done taking the GTA apart (well behind the engine bay anyway). Got off all the old steel lines today, pulled the fuel tank and I will start cleaning and paint prep tomorrow, maybe even get the rust encapsulator on depending on how long it takes to clean, sand (where necessary) and mask the car. Unbelievably the 25 year old steel fuel and brake lines came out in 1 piece, I did find a pin hole in a fuel line though which solves the mystery of why the car smelled like gas when you first shut it off. Also found the car has def been hit on the right front at least once as the subframe is all wrinkled. However I still have not been able to find ANY rust under this car :thumb .I don't think I have ever seen an F-body torn down this far before, kinda cool. Just hoping it goes back together as easy as it came apart (Riiiight!)

Nick, to make your grime cleaning alot easier, try Clean All by Car Brite. Its safe on paints, upholstry, etc. Ive used it on everything and its the best cleaner you can get IMO. I used it full concentrate on a fully restored Case DC tractor and the grime just came right off with little effort. The most difficult challenge was the grease/dirt/oil @ the PTO area of the tractor. I sprayed it full concentrate, hit it lightly with a brush and then washed it all away with water. I will be using it on my car this spring to detail the underside of my car. If you cant find it, let me know.

I'm almost done now, i used a special grease/wax remover. It works great just time consuming. The old man used to spray silicon on it to keep it from rusting so the filth was a good half inch thick. Worked on it for a few hours today, just have to give it one final cleaning tomorrow and it's done. Turns out the underbody isn't painted body color, looks more like a hard gray primer

No rust so no need for POR 15, I used Eastwood Chassis coat black.
Here is what it looked like when I got to it.
Image

After 8 hours of de-greasing, back down to the paint...or sealed primer...or whatever the hell it was.
Image

Masked off for paint and sanded
Image

And finally painted, have to check once it dries and make sure there is no touching up to do.

Ohhh Still proud. Gloss or Satin they are both chassis black and the right color for a clean looking undercarriage.
Can't wait to see what you do with the rest of the suspension.

Post Re: GTA Resto-Mod
Put the 4th gen fuel tank in today, fit perfectly but there are a couple small problems that will have to be addressed at a later date. First the custom made adapter harness from racetronix was about 10 inches too short to reach from the fuel pump to the car side, so I will need to get an extension made for that. Other is the filler neck will need to be modified a bit. Other than that it popped right in. Also rust proofed the rear axle, still waiting on more paint to get here so I am stuck on that for now. So I guess I will while away my time cleaning some of the old parts and doing some more painting. Hopefully the paint shows by Thursday otherwise the axle is going back in and will need to be pulled again later on :/

Another 3 hours spent de-greasing, sand blasting and painting the exhaust heat shields today. Then I rummaged through some boxes and found 2 1/2 cans of the paint I needed for the rear axle so I got the bottom half of that and the rear sway bar painted today. Painting is getting old, thankfully tomorrow morning will be the end of the painting for awhile.

Well rear axle and suspension is installed and the car is back on it's wheels. A little pissed that quite a few parts didn't show up on time, sway bar links and bushings, rear springs, rear LCA's, forged axles, and some other small stuff so i will be doing some disassembling again but it is all in car stuff so shouldn't be too bad. Decided to wait and do the carrier studs when i do the axles so that is still on the list also. Also still need a new torque arm and the Watts link but that can wait for awhile. Also may have found a lead on a fairly priced T56, so keep your fingers crossed!

FINALLY got my T56, I ended up getting an LT1 trans, for the price he was asking I can change the midplate and input shaft when I do teh Viper upgrade and rebuild it. It's also an M28 (out of a 93) so it has the 3.36 first gear in it and no skip shift to deal with. HOPEFULLY the gears are OK because that first gear is hard as hell to find, but for $700 I'll take my chances.

generally around $1500 + dollars for an F-Body/GTO type. And since I am going to tear it all the way down and rebuild it I really didn't want to pay that much

Forgive my ignorance, but what has to be done to mate the LT1 T56 to an LS? The M28 for that price is a great find, look forward to seeing this go together!

Change the bell, the mid-plate and the input shaft. At least according to D&D and Rockland Standard gear that's it, we'll see when I do it.

found this too http://www.gmhightechperformance.com/te ... ewall.html

Got some work done today, put in the new springs, repainted the sway bar (again) and installed it with new hardware, put in new bump stops, new torque arm. Tomorrow if I can get some axle bearings I will do the diff and axles, have to see what happens.
