Post Opinions for exhaust
So I know you all are aware I want to keep the Firehawk as stock as possible, with a very few minor tweeks to make it a bit more functional (IE some electronics upgrades, better suspension bushings, better ball joints etc etc). Now I am at a dilemma when it comes to the exhaust. My plan was to clean up the factory exhaust, weld in some V-Bands for ease of removal in the future, replace the shitted up Y-Pipe and Intermediate pipe, then send it all out to HTC to get it ceramic coated. That is still going ahead as planned hopefully next winter. My dilemma is the stock exhaust manifolds. I was originally going to clean them up and get them coated, but they are in really rough shape and would come out looking like crap after. I've also heard mixed results of the high temp coatings on cast iron and quite a few people said they rusted through again within a year or two. SO My choices:

1: Buy a brand new set of Manifolds and send them out for coating and hope they don't rust through, which strangely is the more expensive choice by quite a bit, but would maintain "originality".

2: Go with Stainless steel coated shorties to maintain all of the original equipment and put the stockers away somewhere for a rainy day.

I'm not interested in a performance upgrade, but I am torn between being uglier (and likely worse to work on if I have to take the manifolds off in the future), plus the likelihood the coating will come off or a much better looking but not original set that costs significantly less when all is said and done. I'm leaning strongly toward stainless, but looking for opinions.

Prices:
New Stock Manifolds, gaskets, hardware, coating + shipping: $1200.00
Maganflow Shorties (come coated with all hardware, gaskets, free shipping): $775.00

Shorties without hesitation. And if your throwing vbands in the exhaust put an electric cutout in for some thrills.

If originality is what you're after, buy some manifolds. What if you coat and just wrap em?

If you want to be cheap and go the shiny/cost effective route, buy some cheap stainless shorties. But that takes away from being original so just go LT's and put the manifolds on the shelf lol.

Do you plan on tuning the car?

How bad are the originals? I've seen originals sandblasted and touched up with a wheel look really good ceramic coated.
I'm going to send the firebird manifolds to be coated next year for the same reason you are... staying original.

They are pretty rough and pitted. It's hard to tell what they would like until I blasted them and see how much flakes off and how even/uneven they turn out. I have the original set from the WS6 that are in pretty decent shape but we ported them and welded the AIR openings closed. I may be able to grind them back out and re-tap them. The GTA is going to get headers now anyway, so even if they get messed up it won't be a huge loss. My main concern with coating the originals is it usually doesn't take well on cast iron. I'd be pissed if I invest hundreds of dollars and a year later it rusts through again. That last set I put in the WS6 before I sold it rusted through the coating in 2 months. The ones we did on the Nova rusted through, the 55 Chevy ones rusted through. Maybe I'll just blast and paint them and see what happens since coating is more than half the cost of the headers.

I used the eastwood manifold coating on the firebird engine many times and it lasted a lot longer than 2 months when applied properly.

I appreciate it, I have a good sand blaster though. I'm just not sure once they are clean it will be an improvement, lol. At least they have the heat shield...
